What is Aromatherapy Anyway?

By ALOHA Expert: Elizabeth Golden

Aromatherapy is the vital, healthy and healing aroma that comes from 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils.  Essential oils come from the essence or heart of the flowers, plants and trees that have vital healing energies.  They support and promote a healthy lifestyle. When you smell a true essential oil, you will feel uplifted, soothed and refreshed and you may have a memory associated with the scent of certain oils. Essential oils have many healing energies, and each plant, flower and tree has gloria flowers 2 its own unique healing vibration. Essential oils ease your mind, soothe your soul, calm your nerves and create overall wellness within the body.

Citrus essential oils such as neroli, sweet orange, mandarin and lemon are uplifting. Soothing essential oil examples are rose, neroli and lavender. If you want to feel refreshed try spearmint, silver fir, pine and eucalyptus.  Eucalyptus is also great along with tea tree oil and lavender to help repel mosquitoes.  Essential oils are healing and transformative, and some like lavender are more versatile for many different reasons, lavender is soothing, wound healing, uplifting, calming to the mind and skin, its also cleansing.

It’s important to have information about essential oils before you use them and always use a carrier for your essential oils. A carrier is an oil, lotion, gel, or soap, used as a base to dilute the potency of the essential oils. Add 20-25 drops of your favorite combination of essential oils to one ounce of your choice of a carrier. As a basic rule in aromatherapy all essential oils need to be diluted before they are used. Very few can be applied neat to the skin.  Neat means that the oil is applied directly to the skin. Lavender is the one oil that can be applied directly to the skin. There are over 600 varieties of lavender and each one is unique. Some can be very inexpensive and not really effective while others such as Tasmanian lavender which is the most expensive, smells amazing and is highly therapeutic too.

Essential oils are safe and they have been used for millennia; Cleopatra used them for bathing and healing herself and to entice her love, Antony.  Essential oils are wonderful to have in an emergency kit, lavender is a great wound healer and it’s very calming.  Tea tree oil is good for insect bites.
